Weird Flowers From Around the World

  • Corpse Flower
The Corpse Flower is very rare and can only be found in Indonesia. It is a parasitic organism that has no leaves, roots, or stems. Some argue that it is a fungus, not a flower. The reason its called a corpse flower is because of its smell, it literally smells like dead things.Photo courtesy of Mike Prince (cc)
  • Desert Pea
This weird, wonderful flower can survive in dry and arid climates. These flowers kind of look like some weird alien plant. It just happens to be a well-known wildflower in Australia, but don't pick it. It is a protected plant so it is illegal to collect any type of these plants.Photo courtesy of Bill & Mark Bell (cc)

This beautiful flower looks like it belongs on a wrapped present, but its actually a vegetable. It is a wild vegetable grown in India and a member of the pumpkin family. It taste like a bitter melon, but despite its terrible taste, it is used for medical reasons. There is also a reddish fruit inside an overly ripe gourd that can be used as a tomato for cooking.

  • Star Flower
The Star Flower is a carrion plant (which means it smells like dead fish). This plant is best to be kept outside because it attracts flies and other bugs. The colors of these plants can range from deep reds, purple, light pinks, mauve, and yellow. Its touchable and feels hairy and leathery.Photo courtesy of Ezequiel Coelho (cc)
  • Subterranean Plant
This South African plant is not a monster, but it is bizarre. Even though it looks crazy, it is actually common in South Africa. It has no visible leaves, roots, or chlorophyll. It is strictly a parasitic underground plant whose flowers take nearly a year to emerge. Although it looks and smells disgusting, it produces tasty berries that are delicious when cooked. The fruit also has astringent properties that can be used to preserve fish, for tanning, and acne treatments.Photo courtesy of Martin Heigan (cc)
