Video game debate

Video games have made a huge impact on the world. They have been made as educational and just plain fun. But some video games are very violent and inappropriate for kids and even adults. There has been a never-ending debate about these violent games, and I don’t approve of them. Here is why.

Video Games and Guns:
Video games often have guns in them.  These guns are used to maim, seriously injure, or kill the enemy. Later in life, this can cause real-life violent behavior. Kids who grow up with these games may not learn the severe consequence of killing. Along with that fact, real-life tragedies often have to do with video games, like the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting gunman was a video game player. This helps prove video games can cause really, really bad behavior.

Bullying:
Everybody knows about bullying. it’s very well known. But what isn’t well known is that video games are usually the cause of it. Playing violent video games causes more aggression, bullying, and fighting.  Kids under 17 that play M-rated games (meant for kids 17 and up) are often very aggressive and are more likely to get into fights at school and at home. Video games can be terribly frustrating and the kids playing the game might take their frustrations out on other people.

Other problems:
Video games are fast paced, attention guzzlers that de-stimulate the brain and can program the way you think. When kids play video games they are not able to focus on other important things (like say, their whole LIFE) because they are so brainwashed by these programs.  Time spent playing video games should be used for reading a book, doing stuff outside, hanging out with friends, and yes, doing schoolwork. Plus, the American Psychological Association (APA) lists violent video games as a risk factor for aggressive behavior.

So even though video games can be fun, violent games just aren't something you should play. They can cause bullying, fights, and even real life tragedies. So if you find a really cool video game at the store, check the rating first. If it says M rated it's probably very violent and you should not play it. instead, why not try Portal,or Little Big Planet Two, or Journey?  They are all fun games, and are totally appropriate for any one. And if they are a little confusing at first, don’t throw down the controller and punch a hole in the TV. Just calm down and try it again. Video games are meant to be fun for everyone, and that includes the people around you. Besides, I don’t think your parents would be very happy with you when they have to go buy a new TV.

  1. About the elementary school shooting: That might just be a random coincidence. If a murderer liked long walks, does that mean that everyone who likes long walks is a murderer?
It might just be a random fact as well. Has every murderer been a video game player? I think that next time, Yarri, you could use better facts, or at least, don't say something that could just be a bit of happenstance.
