Island of the Blue dolphins is about a Indian girl named Karana who was left behind on an an island when her tribe leaves the island. She is alone for years, waiting for the ship that carried her people to the east to return.

This book tells the tale of her time on the island, where Karana spends her time making weapons, building a canoe, and fighting her enemies, the wild dogs. When she’s not doing that, she makes clothes and flower garlands and explores the island. She counts the days and seasons, waiting for a ship never seems to come.

Based on a true story, Island of the Blue Dolphins is great book for older readers, and I highly suggest it. Read the Author’s Note for at the back of the book for a summary of what actually happened.
