Okay, does anyone reading know the song Tradition, from Fiddler on the roof? If not, you can find it here. Though this shows a Jewish setting, what Tevye, the man at the beginning, says about tradition is still accurate. We have tradition for many different things. We have tradition for the clothes we wear (shirt and pants or skirt, covering unmentionables), we have traditions for where to sleep (in bed or on the floor), but what I am talking about is our traditions concerning holidays. Specifically, weird ones.
1. Halloween
Halloween seems pretty weird to other cultures. I mean, handing out candy on one day to dressed-up people, but only if they say Trick or Treat. We must seem pretty weird.
2. Super Bowl Sunday.
And don't argue that this isn't a holiday. Think about it. People everywhere watch it, it becomes a regular occurrence, and BAM. It is a holiday. Unknown persons even make entertainment between games. Crazy.
3. Black Friday
Again, do not think of arguing about this one. Everywhere, people seem to dictate that this is the hugest shopping day in the year. As Tevye says, "You may ask, How did this tradition get started? I'll tell you. I don't know." Why is the day after Thanksgiving the day to throw out all of those thank-yous and get new stuff to be thankful for? You won't find me anywhere near a store on that day.
4. Columbus Day
Why in the world do we celebrate the guy that landed in the Caribbean about 600 years ago? It just does not seem to make sense. Even those guys that he actually found don't celebrate him: they regard him as a villain- he did kind of try to make them all slaves. And all that most people know about him is that he crossed the Atlantic in 1492. They do not know about his slaves, his greed- Why are we celebrating a guy who is that villainous?
That is all for now- I am sure I will think of more later. Until then, think about some of these crazy TRADITIONS!!!!
