Steampunk

You see it everywhere now. Everyone is cos-playing it, or even walking around in everyday life wearing it. But what exactly is steampunk?

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction where modern technology is powered by steam in a recognizable historical or fantasy era. The Victorian era is most commonly done. Clothing is characterized by natural colors, leather, metal, and weaponry. People play the parts of explorers, soldiers, or the upper class, or anything else they can come up with. At a steampunk convention you could run into steampunk Princess Leia talking to steampunk Gandalf while two people in steampunk Victorian outfits are walking by. It's as random as that. You can also see animals playing parts in steampunk too. In a lot of steampunk art, there are animals made of machinery. Some people also dress up their pets and bring them to conventions.

The Senior Art Class, taught by Ms. Claudia, is starting a steampunk block because Ms. Claudia would like us to work on details, and steampunk definitely is detailed. We're doing four components: a drawing, a fashion piece, a sculpture, and a jewelry piece. Ms. Claudia has said (though she may correct me if I'm wrong) that there will be a prize for the person in each component who she feels achieved the steampunk look, and there will be an Ultimate Steampunk Winner at the end of the year.
I will be posting information on these as they are brought up.
