Weird Animals: The Saiga Antelope

Scientific Name: Saiga tatarica

Size: The females are 2 ft 0 in. THe males are 2 ft 7 in.

Habitat: Kalmykia, Mongolia, and West Kazakhstan.

Lifespan: 6 to 10 years.

Dangerous: No.

Endangered: Yes.


Description

The saiga is most reconized by its extremely unusual, oversized nose. The nose is used to filter dust and keep the animal warm and cool. The males are the only ones that have horns. This animal has been extinct in many different countries, but still some remain.  Populations have shrunk again enormously. Only 50,000 survive today, however, certain zoos are trying to introduce the species back to its original number.
