There are over 550 species of Scorpionfly, however, Mecoptera is the largest family. Mecoptera are consumers of dead objects such as insects and humans. They even steal food from spider webs. Scorpionfly have small and slender bodies with mandibles. Like a scorpion, their tail can deliver a powerful sting that sometimes paralyze. The season to see a scorpion fly is in May through September. Although they have wings, the adults rarely fly very far, they would rather crawl on damp vegetation. Scorpionflies usually nest outside, they never nest inside homes. And for anyone who is afraid of these flies, they are rarely seen in Massachusetts. They are seen more in Kentucky.
