The Psychological Disorders of Disney Princesses (Group effort between Jasper and April O'Neil)

Disney Princesses are psychologically a little off.  All Disney princesses have a psychological disorder, so here is a list of what princess has what.  The princesses on this list are ONLY the Official Disney Princesses (Which means they A] have a primary role in a Disney animated feature film, B] be human or closely human-like (i.e. Ariel), and C] not appear primarily in a sequel.)  Though Anna and Elsa have not been added yet, they are supposed to be added in the near future, so they are on this list, too.

Anna:  Chronic Over-trust is when someone trusts everyone and everything.  Anna trusts Hans and they decide to get married even though they met a few hours before and Hans wants to take over the kingdom.

Ariel:  Ariel suffers from body dysmorphic disorder. "This disorder manifests in preoccupation with some perceived defect in one’s body image. The fact that every other merperson under the sea is perfectly content with remaining finned and scaled, her desire for legs is completely abnormal."  Ariel trades her voice to be able to be human.

Aurora:  Hypersomnia is when someone sleeps for long periods of time.  Aurora is supposed to sleep forever, but is awoken by her true love's kiss.

Belle: Stockholm syndrome is when someone sympathizes and empathizes with their captor.  Belle is willingly taken by the Beast and she eventually falls in love with him.

Cinderella: Dependent Personality Disorder is when someone's entire life is based around pleasing a person or group of people.  Cinderella is told to be the maid for her stepmother and stepsisters, and she quickly becomes accustomed to that lifestyle, and isn't willing to defy them.

Elsa: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is when a person is in a traumatic event, such as being in a war.  PTSD causes flashbacks to the scene(s) and can socially impair the person.  Elsa almost killed her sister Anna at a young age and has had flashbacks of that scene for years.  To protect others, she stays in her room almost all the time.

Jasmine:  Jasmine also has Chronic Over-trust.  Jasmine decides to trust someone she's never met before who wants her to jump out a window.  OK then.

Merida: Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is when someone:

• Actively refuses to comply with majority's requests or consensus-supported rules.

• Performs actions deliberately to annoy others.

• Angry and resentful of others.

• Argues often.

• Blames others for their own mistakes.

• Frequently loses temper.

• Spiteful or seeks revenge.

• Touchy or easily annoyed.

Merida acts this way around her mother, and her actions only increase when her mother says she must marry.

Mulan: Gender role disorder (which we made up) is when someone isn't happy with the gender roles of society.  Mulan doesn't like the gender roles of her society, which is a masculine-oriented society.

Pocahontas: "Synesthesia is a neurological phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway."  Pocahontas says she sees the colors of the wind.

Snow White:  Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is when someone does something obsessively.  Snow White cleans the dwarves house obsessively.

Rapunzel: Narcissistic personality disorder is where a person is excessively preoccupied with personal adequacy, power, prestige and vanity. Rapunzel is obsessed with her long hair.

Tiana: Extreme human-animal bonding (which we made up) is an extreme connection between a human and an animal.  Tiana bonds with Naveen when he was a frog, and with other swamp animals.
