The Green Flash is a sort of optical illusion. As the sun is just dissapearing over the flat horizon, it scatters its light. Although the most commonly reflected color is blue, the blue light mostly goes under the horizon, and instead, we see the second most common reflected color: Green. This lasts for a few seconds, but then, as the sun sets completely, it vanishes.
Now you want to see one? All right, i guess I can tell you how.
The first thing that you want is a dark area, with less pollution and no clouds on the horizon, and no trees blocking your view. That's three strikes for Springfield! If anyone is going to Hawaii or the Caribbean this year, those are among the best places to see the Green Flash.
The next thing is to choose the right time. Sunset and Sunrise work out pretty well, as long as you don't look AT the sun.
You have to look DIRECTLY at where the sun will be rising or setting, and wait for the sun to be right about to go under the horizon. The green color will be hard to see. The flash can appear after the sun sets as a glow around the horizon.
I hope that you have enjoyed this. If you have any ideas for future phenomenon, please contact mulberrytimes@gmail.com. Thank you!
