Plot
To help with the explanation of the movie, there will be music! Because some scenes in the movie may be frightening for some viewers, I have some light shows instead of actual scenes from the movie.
The movie opens with a poem written by Tim Burton, the man who came up with the concept for the movie. The premise is that all holidays are created in little worlds, and each little world has no idea of any of the other holiday worlds existing. The movie mostly takes place in Halloween Town, so the town sings a creepy song about their town and how they create Halloween.
As the song says, Jack Skellington helps create Halloween every year. However, Jack is getting tired of Halloween. He takes a long walk with Zero (his ghost dog) and discovers the clearing to enter the other holiday worlds. He is drawn to Christmas and finds it fascinating.
Here's a bonus cover of the song by Fall Out Boy (because their cover is AWESOME!)
Jack comes back to Halloween Town and tells everyone about Christmas, but they don't get it. Jack tries anyway. Sally, a rag doll created by the resident mad scientist, is falling in love with Jack and after a vision of a burning Christmas tree tries to warn him that his idea will fail, but he doesn't listen. She goes and sings in a graveyard.
For all you Evanescence fans, Amy Lee did a beautiful cover of this song:
Jack decides the best way to be able keep Christmas for themselves is to send three kids named Lock, Shock, and Barrel to capture Santa. The kids (little tricksters) give Santa to the Oogie Boogie, a monster with a BIG gambling problem. Jack goes to take care of Christmas and fails badly. He realizes that he needs to fix the problem he made and goes and saves the world.
My Opinion
I decided to sit down and re watch the movie a few weeks ago after listening to the soundtrack (plus the redo, both are stunning) and loved it even more than I remembered. It does have a lot to do with Christian holidays, but it has a good message: don't mess with stuff you don't know how to take care of. Some of the scenes were creepy even for an X-Files fan. Still, I give it a 5/5.
