All-gender bathrooms have been gaining more awareness over the past few years, but many people are unfamiliar with the concept. All-gender bathrooms are what they sound like: anyone of any gender identity can use them. Ever since transgender awareness came above ground in the 90s, more and more people have been demanding at least trans-friendly bathroom be in every building. All-gender bathrooms are also helpful for families with young children (my parents were always really happy when they found a family restroom while going to Grandma's) and people who identify with the gender they were assigned at birth but don't fit the stereotypical representation.
All-gender restrooms usually are a fully enclosed single-stall restroom for privacy and safety. They sometimes have a urinal.
Some people are against all-gender bathrooms because of safety and modesty. They feel that having more than one gender in a restroom could be dangerous, especially for women. However, just as many crimes occur in one-gender bathrooms as they do in all-gender restrooms. Still, because of this concern, many buildings opt to have a multi-stall mens restroom and a multi-stall womens restroom, with one or two all-gender restrooms.
Here are some various all-gender bathroom signs.
